The abducted 38 members of the Catholic Apostolic Church (CAC), Eruku in Ekiti local government area of Kwara State, have regained their freedom from captivity.

The chief press secretary to Kwara State governor, Rafiu Ajakaye, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday evening as the state governor, Abdulrahman AbdulRazaq, praised President Bola Tinubu’s approach for the feat achieved.

The statement read: “After many days of hard work by security forces and government representatives, HE AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq is excited to announce the freedom of 38 persons who were recently abducted in an attack on Christ Apostolic Church (CAC) Eruku, Ekiti LGA, Kwara Kwara.

“The Governor says this is wholly due to the hands-on approach of President Bola Tinubu, GCFR, who has personally led the efforts to free the abductees.

“The abductees were freed today, November 23. The Governor is immensely grateful to President Bola Tinubu, GCFR, for his direct initiative that made this happen.

“The President had called off his scheduled trip for the G20 Meeting in South Africa to attend to the breaches in Kwara and Kebbi States. He had also directed heightened security deployments to Kwara, in what underlined his firm commitment to the safety and wellbeing of our people and Nigerians as a whole.

“The Governor also expresses appreciation to the Office of the National Security Adviser; the Department of State Services (DSS); the Nigerian Army; Nigeria Intelligence Agency; and, of course, the Nigeria Police, which has graciously deployed four new tactical teams to Kwara State on the directive of the President.

“The Governor also thanks members of the security forces across board, thought leaders, religious institutions, and all Kwarans for their support and goodwill since the unfortunate incident.”

United States President Donald Trump, on Sunday, accused Ukraine’s leadership of showing “zero gratitude” for Washington’s efforts to end the war with Russia, even as negotiators from the US, Ukraine and Europe met in Geneva to push discussions on a contentious American peace proposal.

The criticism, posted on Trump’s Truth Social platform, landed moments after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky signalled cautious openness to elements of the 28-point US plan, saying parts of it could incorporate “critical” Ukrainian interests.

The peace blueprint, viewed by many in Kyiv as heavily favourable to Moscow, is being debated behind closed doors in Switzerland, where delegations have been meeting since Saturday.

In his post, Trump wrote in uppercase letters, “UKRAINE ‘LEADERSHIP’ HAS EXPRESSED ZERO GRATITUDE FOR OUR EFFORTS, AND EUROPE CONTINUES TO BUY OIL FROM RUSSIA.”

He added, “I INHERITED A WAR THAT SHOULD HAVE NEVER HAPPENED, A WAR THAT IS A LOSER FOR EVERYONE, ESPECIALLY THE MILLIONS OF PEOPLE THAT HAVE SO NEEDLESSLY DIED.”

Trump has set a Thursday deadline, Thanksgiving Day in the US, for Ukraine to agree to the plan, though he has implied the date could be extended “if things are going well.”

Just minutes before Trump’s post, Zelensky announced that negotiations had reached a point where the US plan might now accommodate “a number of elements based on the Ukrainian vision.”

He stressed that Kyiv was working to ensure all components of the proposal would be “effective in achieving the main goal — to finally put an end to the bloodshed and war.”

Ukrainian, US and European delegations are holding a series of technical and political meetings in Geneva aimed at “finding workable solutions,” Zelensky said.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, speaking at the G20 Summit in Johannesburg, expressed doubt that Kyiv and Washington could bridge their differences before Trump’s deadline.

“I am sceptical a deal can be reached by Thursday,” Merz said.

“That doesn’t mean it’s impossible, but we are very far from that.”

Merz insisted the priority should be drafting a document Ukraine can accept, one that could then serve as the basis for negotiations with Russia.

A senior US official told the BBC there was “a lot of momentum right now” around the Geneva talks, saying both Washington and Kyiv were optimistic.

According to the official, Sunday’s meetings were focused on ironing out difficult elements of the plan.

High-level talks are expected to follow, with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Trump’s diplomatic envoy, Steve Witkoff, meeting with negotiators before breaking into smaller working groups.

More than 8,000 civil servants in the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) will sit for promotion examinations this week.

The promotion examinations were scheduled to hold for five days, starting from Tuesday, November 25 to Saturday, November 29, 2025, at the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) Study Centre along Kubwa Road, Abuja.

Chairman of the FCT Civil Service Commission, Emeka Ezeh, said on Sunday that the over 8,000 civil servants cut across 165 cadres.

He said the FCT Minister, as part of staff motivation, approved the request of the FCT Civil Service Commission to quickly conclude the 2024 promotion exercise of FCT/FCDA workers across all cadres.

He further stated that the promotion exam will be conducted using the Computer-Based Test (CBT), adding that this will deepen the newly introduced digital platform for promotion examinations, which was approved by the FCT Minister.

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has directed the probe of circumstances surrounding the alleged withdrawal of troops from a girls school in Kebbi State where students were abducted on Monday.

The Director, Defence Media Operations, Major General Michael Onoja, stated this in a statement on Sunday.

According to him, the Military High Command was deeply concerned about the unfortunate abduction of the 25 schoolgirls of Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School, Maga, Danko Wasagu LGA of Kebbi State and St. Mary’s Catholic School, Papiri, Agwara LGA, of Niger State.

He condemned in strong terms the heinous act and assured parents of military’s efforts to ensure prompt rescue of the children.

“Our thoughts remain with the students, their families, and the community affected by this incident. The Armed Forces of Nigeria is fully engaged in ongoing operations to ensure the safe rescue of the girls and the apprehension of the perpetrators,” he said.

He stated that the DHQ was aware of claims made by the governor of Kebbi State, Nasir Idris, that the terrorists struck 30 minutes after troops were withdrawn from the school.

“In line with our standard procedure, a thorough review is currently underway to ascertain the circumstances surrounding troop deployment and movements in the area at the time of the incident.

“It is important to note that all operational decisions are based on intelligence assessments and the broader security architecture of the region. Nevertheless, if the ongoing review identifies any lapse or gap, the Armed Forces will take immediate corrective action to prevent a recurrence,” the DHQ spokesman stated.

The Director said Defence Headquarters remained committed to working closely with state authorities, community leaders, and other security agencies to strengthen protection around schools and vulnerable communities.

He further assured Nigerians that the rescue effort was a top priority, and troops were actively on the ground, pursuing all actionable intelligence to ensure the safe return of the abducted students.

According to him, the Defence Headquarters acknowledged the concerns of Nigerians regarding the recent increase in insecurity in parts of the North.

“We wish to assure the public that the Armed Forces of Nigeria remain fully committed to restoring peace and stability across all affected communities,” he added.

The Deputy Speaker, Borno State House of Assembly, Hon. Abdullahi Askira, has confirmed the abduction of 13 female farmers by suspected members of Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists.

The incident, which took place on Saturday, occurred when the victims went to Mussa District to jointly harvest their farm produce.

The Newspaper Proprietors’ Association of Nigeria (NPAN) has elected the Publisher of The Guardian newspaper, Lady Maiden Alex-Ibru, as its new President, with the association urging the federal government to prioritise measures that will cushion the harsh impact of ongoing economic reforms.

The chairman of LEADERSHIP Media Group, Mrs. Zainab Nda-Isaiah, was also elected as an ex-officio member — one of several new officers inaugurated at the association’s 2025 Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Abuja.

In a statement jointly signed by Lady Alex-Ibru and the General Secretary, Mrs. Angela Emuwa, NPAN said the AGM deliberated extensively on the state of the nation, media responsibility, and the challenges confronting the newspaper industry.

Reaffirming its commitment to democratic values, NPAN warned of a shrinking democratic space and threats to Nigeria’s multi-party system.

It stressed the importance of free and fair elections, respect for the rule of law, and an independent judiciary.

The association also criticised inadequate regulation of online media platforms while reiterating its commitment to press freedom and freedom of expression.

Justice Gladys Olotu of the Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered President Bola Tinubu to
to make public the forensic audit report on Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) submitted to the federal government on September 2, 2021.

Justice Olotu also ordered the president to direct the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), to disclose the names of individuals implicated in the alleged misappropriation of over N6trillion budgeted for 13,777 abandoned projects and for managing the NDDC from 2000 to 2019.

The judge delivered the judgement in a Freedom of Information suit (number: FHC/ABJ/CS/1360/2021) filed by the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP).

The court also held that the forensic audit report of the NDDC, along with the names of those indicted, clearly qualify as ‘public records’ under Section 31 of the Freedom of Information Act.

She also noted that the NDDC forensic audit report and the list of indicted persons were not exempt under Sections 11-19, since the information pertains to the management and use of public funds.

Justice Olotu maintained that the refusal by the president and the Attorney General to publish the report or address the allegations, despite a formal demand by SERAP, breached their statutory duties under the Freedom of Information Act, Section 15(5) of the Nigerian Constitution 1999 (as amended), and Nigeria’s international commitments to transparency and accountability.

The judge further held that section 2(3) of the Freedom of Information Act requires all public institutions to publish specific categories of information, including financial details and expenditure records.

She held, “Applying these principles, the Freedom of Information Act imposes on the president a clear, non-discretionary duty to make the NDDC forensic audit report available to the public and publish the names of those indicted in the report.

“It is trite law that for an order of mandamus to issue, SERAP must establish (a) a clear legal right to the performance of a duty, (b) a corresponding duty on the president and the Attorney General to perform that duty, (c) a demand for the performance of the duty, and (d) a refusal or neglect to perform same.

“Every person has the right to access information in the custody of any public official or institution, and such institution is under a statutory duty to grant access, except where the information falls within the limited exemptions set out under Sections 11-19 of the Act.

SERAP deputy director Kolawole Oluwadare said: “This ground-breaking judgment is a victory for transparency and accountability in the spending of public funds.”

In his reaction to the judgement, human rights lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN), said that SERAP deserved the commendation of all well-meaning people who have agonised over reports of systemic corruption in Nigeria.

Falana also stated that the suit was one of the most patriotic public interest litigations ever undertaken in Nigeria.

He said, “I welcome this landmark judgment, which has upheld the public’s right to know exactly what happened to the N6 trillion oil money documented in the NDDC forensic audit report.

“The Tinubu administration must now demonstrate real commitment to transparency and accountability by immediately publishing the NDDC forensic audit report and the names of those indicted, as ordered by the court. Those suspected to be responsible should be brought to justice and the proceeds of corruption fully recovered.”

“Delayed enforcement of Justice Olotu’s judgment would undermine both the fight against corruption and the rule of law in the country. The time for secrecy over the names of those indicted in the report and the report itself is over,” Falana added.

A coalition of indigenous groups and residents in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has appealed to FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, calling for immediate intervention in the plight of the residents of Kuchibedna community in Kafe District, whose homes were recently demolished by a developer.

The call came amid growing tension over what community leaders described as “indiscriminate demolition” of indigenous settlements across the capital city, leaving thousands homeless and threatening the cultural heritage of the territory’s original inhabitants.

The Coordinator of the FCT Senior Citizens Forum, Elder Danjuma Tanko Dara, at a press briefing in Abuja on Friday, voiced the collective frustration of indigenous communities, demanding justice for those displaced by the recent demolitions.

“We are calling on the Honourable Minister, Barrister Nyesom Wike, to ensure that all affected natives and residents in the Kuchibedna community are compensated,” he said.

The community leader emphasised that the crisis extended far beyond Kuchibedna, noting that apart from residents of Kuchibedna community, other affected communities in the FCT that have been displaced by demolition, including Gishiri, Dagbalo, among others, should also be compensated.

Elder Dara issued a warning to the FCT Administration and the federal government about the potential consequences of continuing the current policy of displacement without adequate compensation.

“The minister should put an end to the indiscriminate demolition of natives of Abuja communities all in the name of public interest, because the natives are gradually being pushed to the wall and anything that would not be in the interest of anybody might happen if care is not taken,” he said.

The coordinator of the Senior Citizens Forum, while challenging the current administration’s approach to urban development, posed a fundamental question about the rights of indigenous people in the FCT.

“There is no state in Nigeria where the original inhabitants of the state do not have their villages. Why are the natives of the FCT treated as second-class citizens who have no right to live in their ancestral land, by taking away their land to give to a non-indigenous developer?

“We are true citizens of Nigeria and we should be treated as such. That is why we are advocating for our elected governor, more House of Representatives and Senate members. Because if we have the complete democratic structures in the FCT, all this kind of things would not happen.

“The federal government should end this marginalisation of the FCT natives by ensuring that we are given the democratic structures that are due to the FCT as the 37th State of Nigeria. We cannot continue to endure the indescrimate demolition of our houses, all these must stop. Enough is enough,” he said.

A 73-year-old man has reportedly gone missing after falling overboard from the Disney Wonder cruise ship in the Tasman Sea.

According to PEOPLE, the incident occurred on Saturday, November 22, while the ship was sailing from Melbourne, Australia, to Auckland, New Zealand.

Reports indicated the man jumped from the ship at around 4:30 a.m local time. In response, the Disney Wonder turned around and conducted a search of the surrounding waters for roughly five hours. The search reportedly included the use of thermal imaging cameras, but the man was not found.

Passengers said the mood on board grew tense and somber. One passenger recalled how the captain announced that a passenger had gone overboard and that despite the crew’s efforts, he could not be located.

The passenger added that “it was quite sombre, and it was a bit eerie the rest of the day,” noting that many of the crew appeared shaken by the incident.

Victoria Police confirmed that the man’s body has not been recovered and that they were preparing a report for the coroner, but officials said they were not treating the event as suspicious.

Leave for about 30 minutes after which all the fish must have been dead then you can start the steps mentioned above.
CLEANING

•     clean fish, removing the gills and intestine.

•     Wash in clean water.

BRINE AND CURE

what is brine?  Basically, brine is salt and water.

Soaking the fish in brine will achieve a few things:

•    It will firm up the flesh to be less mushy.

•    It will draw out any old blood, which will improve the taste.

•    It will add some saltiness to the fish in the right amounts; this is desired.

•    It will add some additional flavoring to the fish.

•    The cure will ensure that we are protected from the deadly botulism bacteria, especially since this is a relatively low temperature cooking environment.

(Brine recipe • 1/2 gallon good clean spring water • 3/4 cup kosher salt (or plain salt, but not iodized salt)

SMOKING AND DRYING
•     Prepare smoker.  Too much smoke will cause the fish to taste bitter. Use just enough wood to maintain a steady smoke. There are various kinds of oven. We shall discuss that in another article.
